Introduction:In 2003, Ranbaxy Laboratories Limited (Ranbaxy) was India's No.1 pharmaceutical companywith annual sales of Rs. 45,301 million ($972 million), a 22% increase from 2002. Ranbaxy manufactured and marketed generics, branded generic pharmaceuticals and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). It was amongst the top ten global generic companies and sold products in over 100 countries with manufacturing operations in seven and presence in 34 countries. Its overseas markets accounted for 76% of the annual sales of which US and Europe contributed over 50%. In February 2004, Ranbaxy achieved the distinction of being the first Indian pharmaceutical company to cross the billion-dollar mark in annual sales. Achieving the target before the end of 2004 was coined by Ranbaxy officials as "Winning Chemistry at Work": "There is a winning chemistry working ceaselessly at Ranbaxy.
